몇몇 게임들은 매우 특별한 경우를 가지고 있다. 이 게임도 그런 경우인데, 게임의 많은 재발매가 이루어졌지만, 그것들중 하나도 실제 상업적 히트를 친 것이 없었다. Kuhhandel is however, as I could see in many occasions, the favorite game of many game authors, the one everybody is jealous of, the one everybody would have liked to invent. Me too.
The basic idea is a very classical bidding system. Each player on turn draws an animal card from the deck and auctions it. Highest bidder pays to the auctioneer and get the animal. Auctions are rather noisy and stormy, players speaking like horse traders and sometimes trying to rig the price. Atmosphere like in a true catlle market.

Furthermore, the games has two parts. first, all the animals from the deck are auctionned. Then, players try to buy animals one from another. And then, its no more about bidding, but only about bluffing. And this brings to many reversals till the end of the game.

Don't be fooled: Kuhhandel looks simple, but it's by far the best bidding game. Less complex, but much more vicious than Medici, Ra, Modern Art or all the big heavy boxes using a bidding system;

One last point: there were many editions of this game, with some changing in the rules. The yellow box on the top left of this page is that of the first edition. Better try to find a more recent game, in a black or black and white box. There are a few changes in the rules, all for the better.
For those who have a yellow box, here are the main changes:

  • Each player starts with 4 x 10 and 1 x 50
  • Trades: the player who bid the most money takes the animals, the other player keeps the money he got from him (instead of taking back the money he bid).

Scoring: Multiply the value of your families with the number of kinds. No 500 point bonus.
